I'm a big believer in finding one's balance to help maintain their health and well being. Whether that be through diet, exercise, meditation etc. I think it's important for people to be in tune w/ themselves, listen to what their bodies are telling them.

Now I'm not saying I don't believe in Western medicine or anything like that. I personally like to take a combined approach to my own well being that uses practices from both holistic and western medicine.

Recently, I got to experience a combination of Aromatherapy, Reflexology and Reiki at the newly opened Olistika Wellness Centre. My treatments were with the owner Filippo and I have to say one thing I immediately noticed/sensed about Filippo was that I could tell he was a very gentle and sensitive person. I could tell he genuinely does really care about people and their well being. Once I sat down and talked w/ Filippo a bit before my treatments I could really see how passionate he was about this new endeavor and his career overall. He also has a very relaxing and calm energy which is really a nice change from the sometimes chaotic city life I find myself surrounded in.

Before the treatments Filippo asked about any medications I might be on or injuries/conditions to be aware of. We talked about my on-going battle w/ acne and Filippo suggested I read his one blog post about his battle w/ teenage acne and let me tell you I can totally relate to how he felt back then because I too had really bad acne for a period of time in my teens as well so I know how it can really effect your mood, self esteem and outlook. Filippo suggested I use lavender oil to spot treat the acne I currently have on my back and face. Luckily, I didn't have to go out searching for lavender oil as Filippo actually made me a beautiful little aromatherapy care package that included: Olistika Mist - Lavender, Olistika Special Blend - Healer & Olistika Skin Body Blend - Winter. All the ingredients in the products are organic, vegan and crafted by Filippo himself.

Now on to the treatments!

For the aromatherapy there was a choice between relaxing and energizing...I went w/ relaxing. On top of the aroma-laced cloth that was gently placed over my face (which was relaxing not suffocating don't worry) I was also given headphones that played reiki music which really helped "zone me out" and relax me. The aromatherapy was done in combination w/ the reflexology treatment which focused on my feet. I was worried that I would be ticklish and squirmy but it's a firm sort of massage/pressure point treatment so no tickling. In fact in some places it was actually kind of sensitive...like not painful but sensitive. What's really interesting about it all is that different parts of the feet are suppose to connect w/ different parts of your body. I didn't tell Filippo which side of my body I had back and leg problems on but on my left foot there was sensitivity in areas that were related to both my back and leg!

The some of the benefits of reflexology are it can release tension and improve circulation. It can also help with things like anxiety, depression, chronic and acute pain, migraines, insomnia, high blood pressure and a multitude of other ailments.

The reiki treatment is a completely different style of treatment and in fact there is very little touching in it in general besides a little bit of touching on the forehead and shoulders. It it suppose to help gently balance you emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually by releasing blockages that you carry with you. Reiki can be used to treat things like: life changes/transitions, traumas, loss, mental/physical fatigue, over worry, colds/flu, allergies and the list goes on.

The reiki treatment itself was very interesting. One stand out moment for the treatment for me was I actually had to stop it because of my acute back pain. I can't lie flat on my back for long periods of time w/out getting a sharp and very uncomfortable pain in my back. I had to sit up and I explained the situation. Filippo then did some reiki treatment on the spot on my back which did involve him putting his hand on the spot but there wasn't any sort of massage or pressure really. After a couple of mins I was able to lie down again and my back pain was much relieved in the area and we could finish with the treatment.

One thing that Filippo does at the end of every session is sort of giving you a "reading". He doesn't claim to be psychic or anything but he does feel he's a very intuitive person who gets "feelings" or "hunches" about things or even flashes images pertaining to the person. So after the reiki session we talked about the different things he sensed or read about me during the treatment and some of it was very true or things I could definitely relate to or see about myself.

So if you're interested/curious in holistic treatments I'd definitely look into Olistika and the services they provide. Filippo is a very empathetic healer and you can tell he has a genuine passion for what he does. He also offers group sessions and is a licensed holistic practitioner as well as Reiki Master Teacher Registered Practitioner.

A couple of mths ago the ppl at Chorus Supernatural Skin Care reached out to me about trying some
products from their line. Whenever I'm asked to review a product - especially skin care related I like to really use the product for awhile so that I can provide a really honest opinion about the products and how they worked for me.

Well I've been using the products for a couple of mths now so I can honestly say I REALLY like them! And one of the coolest things about the brand (at least to me) is that it's from Canada and manufactured in Richmond B.C. I do like to support Canadian companies whenever possible so this was definitely a bonus w/ the brand.

Of course if the products themselves weren't good that wouldn't have mattered but thankfully they are! Also, important to a lot of ppl these days who are concerned about what they put on their skin or ingest into their bodies - Chorus is 100% natural source ingredients. It's free from petro-chemicals, artificial fragrance and colour. Plus not only do they promise premium quality ingredients in their products but they are also some of the safest in the industry as rated by the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep website.

The 4 Key Ingredients that are the basis of everything they make are:

Lithia - A clean, untainted spring water that emerges high on a mountainside in the Rockies of British Columbia. This is some of the purest water on the planet, with a significant level of naturally occurring lithium.

Moor - A rare, nutrient-rich peat, created by the gradual transformation of herbs, plants & flowers that have been submerged beneath the Earth's surface for many thousands of years.

Seaweed - Hand-harvested giant kelp, from the cold, pristine waters off the northern tip of Vancouver Island.

Clay - One of the most mineral-rich clays in the world, obtained from ancient volcanic caves and mountain slopes on the western shores of Vancouver Island.

Because my skin is ALWAYS on the oily/combination side I tried out skincare specific to my skin concerns.

Facial Mask - The product is 100% organic and natural and consists purely of moor peat and water. Just mix a teaspoon of it w/ a couple of drops of water and rub onto the skin. I really liked how soft it made my skin feel plus I find anything clay based really helps suck out some of the excess oil in my pores. If you rub it into your skin when your washing it off you also get a nice, gentle exfoliation and it's not so drying that my skin felt tight or uncomfortable afterward.

Cleansing Gel - It's a low foaming, hypoallergenic cleanser w/ key ingredients of moor, seaweed extract, tea tree oil, lavendar, lemongrass and ylang-ylang. I LOVE how this product smells. For a product that has not artificial fragrance this smells so good and I feel better knowing that the smell is from natural ingredients not chemicals. It feels refreshing on the skin and just like the mask it doesn't make my skin feel tight or uncomfortable but it does a good job and cleansing it.

Clarify Moisturizer - Out of the 3 products I tried this is BY FAR my favourite of the 3! It's oil free, lightly hydrating and great for acne prone adults (aka ME). It absorbs excess oil, refines skin and reduces the appearance of enlarged pores. It also creates a MATTE finish on the skin which for an oily person like me is a perfect starting canvas for my morning routine. I really loved the way it made my skin feel - smooth and matte but again not tight or uncomfortable like it was over drying it. I'd definitely recommend this moisturizer to oily skin people!

All the products are very affordable in my opinion - especially considering the high quality ingredients involved. All the products I tried came in under $23.00 Canadian/product. You can buy them online and there is a growing number of retailers carrying the products. If you look on their site you can see them. Definitely a skincare brand I would recommend looking into!

So for the last year I've been rocking various shades and degrees of alternative hair colours. At first I was doing purple and with every hair appt. I was bleaching a bit more of my hair to achieve an all over purple look.

In February I decided to switch it up and go blue! I've totally been loving the blue...I think even more than the purple! The issue for anyone who chooses to dye their hair these unnatural and crazy colours is the upkeep and keeping the colour fresh and not faded.

When I first heard of Overtone Haircare I knew (or at least hoped) my fading hair colour worries would be over! After debating for a mth or so about ordering it (it's not that cheap and w/ the shipping and exchange to Canada makes it even more pricey) I decided to take the plunge and order! Let me tell you I'm SO GLAD I did! This product is AMAZING!!! Seriously the difference it makes on my hair just using the Weekly Treatment Conditioner once made on my hair made me a believer! I bought the complete system which includes the Daily Conditioner and the Weekly Treatment Conditioner.

So this product is designed primarily for ppl w/ the wild and crazy colours in their hair, you know - Blue, Orange, Purple, Pink, Teal etc. But what's really awesome is the fact that you can combine colours to make your own custom colour for your hair. Plus they have 3 different levels for each colour - Pastel, Vibrant & Extreme! I'm using the Blue Extreme for anyone that's curious.

The best way to figure out what would work for you is to take their little quiz and it will let you know the best product to achieve or keep the colour you want/have. You can even use this product on bleached hair alone (ie. you don't already have it dyed a crazy colour) and it will deposit colour so it doesn't just revive worn out colour it adds it too! I'm actually going to try this w/ some blonde extension pieces that I have that I've been thinking of dying blue.

What I really love is how soft and silky it makes my hair feel after I've used it. Unfortunately, all this bleaching to my hair has not been kind and I have a lot of breakage and dryness b/c my hair is naturally fine and thin and it was previously dyed black prior to my new found crazy colour routine. Plus it really helps cut down expensive trips to the salon to get your colour retouched and you can wash your hair in warm water! No more cold showers!

I definitely recommend wearing gloves when you apply it to your hair. It doesn't dye your hands like traditional colour but just to be on the safe side. Also, it's vegan and cruelty free for all those people out there that are curious about that sort of thing!
Both pics are with natural light hitting the hair. The After pic I had used the Daily Conditioner twice and the Weekly Treatment Conditioner once!

Wow...not gonna lie I'm a little embarrassed to realize I haven't written a blog post in 2 mths! Just goes to show how busy you can get sometimes w/ work! It is wedding season after all and June/July have been pretty crazy for me...which I'm definitely not going to complain about b/c we all know there are those slow Winter mths when there is too much time! Actually on an exciting note June was my highest grossing mth on record yet! The wedding business is definitely moving on the right track and I've almost doubled the number of staff wedding bookings this year!

Anyway, back to what this post is actually suppose to be about ;) I met Christina back in January when she hired me to makeup and hair for her engagement party. Right away I thought she was really awesome and I was hoping she'd hire me for her big day - which funny enough happens to be on my BIRTHDAY - Oct 15 2016. You know if I'm going to work my birthday it means it has to be a bride I actually like lol! This obviously shows what a planner Christina is as well b/c she's taking almost 2 years to plan the wedding of her dreams lol! Even her engagement party at Wvrst had all sorts of special and thoughtful details to make it a bit different and unique.

Christina did hire me for her wedding - Yeah :) And a couple of mths ago she hired me to do the makeup and hair for her engagement session - Double Yeah :) When I say this girl is a planner you have no idea! Originally she had a whole other engagement shoot session planned but literally the day before the shoot when she realized the weather wasn't going to co-operate she didn't reschedule the shoot like a lot of brides - no she went with it and literally planned a whole new shoot w/ new locations inside...and it was pretty friggin' awesome! The girl had like 3 or 4 locations w/ look changes and everything lol! This also shows that on her wedding day she'll be able to roll with the inevitable changes and switches that always seem to happen no matter what you do.

One of my fav things about Christina is that even though day to day she isn't necessarily a huge makeup person she loves to experiment for events. For her engagement party we did a really vampy burgundy lip and for the engagement shoot we had fun w/ a teal green liner look and waved beachy hair which looked amazing w/ the flower crown she got from Coriander Girl!

Here's some of my fav pics from the shoot. The location was Kitten and the Bear and even though I've never been there before I definitely want to try it now it looks so cute! They also did some really cool stuff at Future Food Studio and comic book store too I think. Really it was just the perfect locations to show off their mutual interests and loves!

Back in February on Valentine's Day actually I had the chance to work w/ an amazing group of girls and I'm so excited I got pictures from this awesome day because Nicole (the bride) looked stunning! Seriously, gorgeous! Totally website worthy lol! The group was so laid back and fun and we had a great time getting them ready at the Radisson on Queens Quay before the big event at Atlantis.

With the wedding being on Valentine's Day it could have been super cheesy but thankfully it wasn't and Nicole kept everything really classy and sophisticated. I loved how the bridesmaids dresses went together but didn't completely match each other and even the bridesmaids themselves chose makeup and hair styles that really complimented them. Two of them went w/ bold lips and updos while the other two went w/ more neutral lips and down hair...totally not planned but kinda cool how it all worked out like that lol.

Nicole doesn't wear a lot of makeup (like so many of my brides) so I really tried to keep it soft and natural. Very glowy pink flushed cheeks, soft eye w/ a small winged liner, nude pink lip and airbrush foundation. Really I just wanted to accentuate and enhance her natural beauty. For her hair we added additional clip-in extensions that really made all the difference in styling! I set her hair in the beginning of the appt. and when I took it out and styled it we got that big gorgeous Victoria Secret hair that so many woman want on their wedding day. The important thing to remember is that the hair will settle and go down...plus it photographs differently than you think it looks. So often my brides freak out a bit about the volume b/c they aren't use to it but it does go down and it only seems big b/c it's different. In fact a lot of times what I've done is actually not even as big as the reference pics they've show me lol.

Thank you again to Damion Rae Photography for the beautiful pictures! You guys did an awesome job capturing the day!

As I mentioned in my SilkPeel post the other day I would do a follow up post about my experience trying out the AMAZING fillers by Teosyal by Clarion Medical Technologies. Again this procedure was performed at Dr. Cory Torgerson's office and this procedure was performed by the doctor himself.

Right from the beginning he consulted w/ me to find out my personal face/fine line concerns and then suggested the best course of action to get the results I was looking for. I don't have a lot of wrinkles as I'm only in my early 30s but I did have some areas under my eyes and around my mouth that bugged me a bit.

I've personally always been of the mindset that it's good to keep on top of and start these things before they become really noticeable. I like to think of it as preventative anti-aging care...much like the various creams and serums I use on my face. I always figure if I start now and keep it subtle 1. It will prevent less wrinkles from forming in the future 2. It will never be a huge shock where someone will immediately go "Oh you've had work done" b/c it's small things over time and it's never a huge change

Dr. Torgerson explained to me about how as we age we lose volume in our face and cheeks and he also explained for around my mouth our it was necessarily about filling in the fine lines but lifting the cheek area using fillers so that they lines themselves would be lifted away. He explained that a great way to use fillers is actually tear troughs...it's actually not one of the most popular or common places to use fillers yet but it's actually a great way to reduce dark circles and increase the volume under the eyes making them look less tired and sunken in. I'll be totally honest this is the area I definitely experienced the biggest results and I can't believe it's not a more common/popular area to get fillers b/c I think dark circles really are one of the biggest skin concerns women have! I also really appreciated his honesty and integrity when I asked about lip fillers and he explained he didn't really think it was necessary...I've never actually been that concerned w/ them but I just kind of wanted a professional's opinion on the matter.

A little bit about Teosyal b/c it's not necessarily that well known in North America right now (but I think that might change). It's Europe's #1 Dermal Filler. It's the purest filler on the market which results in less swelling. Depending on the area injected the results can last anywhere from 6-18 mths. It also integrates naturally into the tissue, allowing for dynamic and natural expression (no frozen face lol).

So what's really amazing about the Teosyal fillers that Dr. Torgerson used on me is that unlike popular (and possibly more well known brands in North America right now) Juvederm or Restylane, Teosyal has several different customizable fillers depending on your face or aging concerns. There are different fillers used for around the eyes vs. the lips vs. cheeks. etc. I thought this was really cool b/c the areas are different w/ their own concerns and issues so it only makes sense for the filler to be slightly different in its formulation.

I think part of the reason fillers haven't become more popular in the tear trough area in Canada is that Teosyal Redensity II is actually the only dermal filler Health Canada has approved to treat tear trough hollows. This specific formula has a subtle mix of cross-linked and non cross-linked hyaluronic acid and it's adapted to the fragile and challenging under-eye circles area. There is little swelling and the results are immediate! It's also blended w/ a complex of vitamins, amino acids, antioxidants and minerals to help restore the quality of the skin.

The Teosyal fillers also have lidocaine in them to help w/ comfort and pain for during and after the treatment. They also have lidocaine free Teosyal for those w/ anesthetic sensitivities. I personally found the procedures to be quite pain free...well a little prick but nothing I couldn't handle and it was all over quite quickly. My face was a bit swollen/sensitive to the touch after and there was a bit of bruising but that's common and it went away.

Now on to some pictures! I personally had 3 times of Teosyal fillers injected into my face. A subtle amount of Ultimate in my cheeks to help with sagging and add lift to my upper cheeks. Redensity II through my tear troughs which I talked about earlier. And Kiss in the nasolabial folds.

This First picture although not the most flattering is my FAVOURITE b/c it actually shows the work with Half my Face DONE! I'm pretty sure you can tell which side is done and which isn't lol! Notice the subtle lift around the mouth and cheeks and definitely notice the huge difference under the eyes! The one side that is treated has not large crease or dark circle! Please excuse my skin a bit I did just have microdermabrasison right before this lol!

This picture shows a close up of the same eye Before and 2 wks Post Treatment. Both No Makeup (other than a bit of mascara/brows in first pic). Notice the reduction in darkness and the crease under the eye is dramatically reduced too! It's just filled it and so much more refreshed! Also notice how improved my skin looks since the SilkPeel Facial ;)

This is a Before & After (1 wk post treatment). I showed the first pic above w/ no makeup so that you didn't just think the difference was due to the awesome professional lighting at Dr. Torgerson's office and my equally awesome makeup skills ;) Seriously he has his Before & After Picture taking skills down to a science lol!

The following 2 pics are Before & Afters taken in Dr. Torgerson's office w/ his awesome lighting...I actually think it's almost a bit too awesome because it covers up how bad my eyes looked in the Before pic so the results don't look quite as big as they actually were. Plus again I didn't want you to think it was just the magic of good lighting and good makeup!

Recently I had the pleasure of experiencing a lovely procedure called a SilkPeel Facial at Dr. Cory Torgerson's office in Yorkville (Toronto). I must say I cannot speak highly enough not only about Dr. Torgerson himself but his staff too! Right away when you enter the office the receptionist offered me a coffee, tea or water and Vanessa the aesthetician performing the SilkPeel procedure was very friendly and informative about everything that was going on.

I'll give a little background about this procedure and exactly what it is. SilkPeel Dermalinfusion by Clarion Medical Technologies is basically IMO the next generation in Microdermabrasion. It's a non-evasive skin procedure that rejuvenates and exfoliates the skin leaving it glowing and refreshed afterwards. You can totally do a treatment like this on your lunch hour and head back to work afterwards. It's pain free - basically it feels like a cat running it's tongue over your face...and in a way kind of relaxing lol. Like regular dermabrasion treatments a diamond tip wand is run over the skin helping to exfoliate damaged skin cells.

What's really awesome about the SilkPeel technology is the condition specific topical solutions that are also distributed onto and into the skin during the treatment. With these specific solutions this procedure can help a multitude of skin concerns such as: acne, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, dull skin, dehydration etc. It's completely non toxic, will not cause any sensitivity to sunlight and it's safe for all skin types!

There's 4 different solutions to choose from:

Clarifying Solution - For acne prone, blemished and oily skin. It exfoliates, soothes and promotes cellular turn over.

Hydration Solution - For dry skin this solution hydrates, smoothes and gently exfoliates skin.

Vitamin C Solution - This detoxifying solution clarifies, hydrates, brightens and soothes the skin.

Lumixyl Solution - This solution is best for hyperpigmentation, discolouration and evening out skin tone

As anyone who reads this blog knows I suffer from acne (still as an adult ugh) so I of course chose the Clarifying Solution. Immediately afterwards I noticed that my skin was very smooth and soft to the touch! There was a bit of dryness for 1-2 days afterwards but nothing serious and all and I do find the overall appearance of my skin has improved w/ only 1 treatment...I can imagine the results would be even more impressive w/ multiple treatments.

SilkPeel can also be used in combination with laser and light based treatments for even greater results. There's also a SilkPeel Body system which can also help with cellulite, acne, sun spots, stretch marks, elasticity and rough or dry/dull skin!

During my treatment I made a little video for you guys to see...as you can see during the treatment it does cause a bit of redness on the skin but that quickly subsides once the treatment is over with.

I would definitely recommend Dr. Torgerson's office not only for this procedure but also the multitude of other services he offers...you can also check out his Instagram and see some of the awesome Before & After shots from surgeries and other treatments.

So anyone that wears false lashes on the regular knows that Mink Lashes are the more luxurious and high end option compared to commonly found synthetic lashes so when ESQIDO false eyelashes asked me to try out some of their lashes I of course jumped at the opportunity!

Esqido were kind enough to send me two pairs of lashes: Lashlorette and Voila Lash. For the purposes of this review though I'm only going to talk about Lashlorette.

Voila Lash is a beautiful lash but it's VERY FULL and long...I can only imagine wearing this style for a club night or perhaps New Years Eve sort of thing...definitely not your "Go to dinner" or "Nice night out" lashes...at least on my eyes (just a bit to overwhelming to look natural.

Lashlorette on the other hand was a perfect "Night Out" lash. Perfect amount of volume and length to add drama and definition to the eye w/out looking like a drag queen or just "too much". As I've found w/ other mink lashes in the past Esqido lashes have a great curve to them and fall nicely on to the lash line making them very easy to apply. And they are very light weight once on.

The great thing about mink lashes vs. synthetic is yes while they are more expensive w/ proper care you can get up to 25 uses from them. So they are an investment but if you're spending $5-7 on a pair of synthetic Quo lashes from Shoppers that you only wear once if you wear these even for half the amount of times they say they'll actually work out to be cheaper. And don't worry animal lovers all the mink is responsibly sourced during a natural molting/shedding cycle and they are sterilized and hypoallergenic.

One of the great things about Esqido's site is they offer a Lash Guide which asks several questions about your eyes, the occasion and your lash applying expertise to help suggest the best lash for you!

For my business purposes I do personally wish the bands on the lashes were clear not black and that they had shorter options (even the least voluminous option is still quite long). My clients tend to be VERY natural people so even though I know how to rock a set of lashes like Lashlorette when I go out I think a lot of them would find something like that still WAY too dramatic for them.

Also when choosing a lash you have to look at the person's natural eye shape. I personally don't have a lot of lid space therefore something like Voila Lash just sort of overwhelms my eye but someone w/ huge eyes and lots of lid space before the brow could totally pull of something like this.

Although I didn't try them out knowing my personal style and my clients I think Unforgettable and Little Black Lash would be great options! I personally prefer the types where they enhance the eye but the average person might not even know they are fake.

They also have a PRO Makeup Artist Program so definitely something for the MUAs out there to check out!

All the pics are showing the Lashlorette Style...as you can see on my eyes they are very full and quite dramatic. They pretty much reach my eyebrows...This is why I think anything bigger or fuller might just be a bit of overkill on my eyes.

I was recently contacted by Starla - Bomb City Beauty creator to try out a couple of her organic and delicious smelling body butter and lip balm products and I'm so glad I did! These things feel awesome on the skin and what makes it even better is that they are all natural, handmade and good for you!

Bomb City Beauty originates from B.C. Canada and I'm all about helping out other Canadian companies and start ups...I think it's really important for us to try and support local and small businesses vs. always shopping for the big name brands. If you're in Salmon Arm BC you can get the products straight from the source at Shuswap Health Foods and Bar but if you don't find yourself in Salmon Arm BC no worries Starla also has an Etsy page where you can buy her yummy products and she's working on a website too (she ships worldwide)!

I got to try out the Top Secret Strawberry Body Butter and the Strawberry Spark Lip Bomb...all the names have little references to bombs, spies or that sort of thing. As I mentioned before the products are all Organic, Made to Order, Homemade and Never Tested on Animals so you know you aren't getting something that has been sitting around on shelves for mths.

The body butter lists its ingredients as: Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil, Vitamin E, Organic Fragrance Oils & H20...so nothing we can't pronounce and no chemicals or additives...just all good natural stuff. It melts onto the skin really nicely and feels very moisturizing but not too oily..although I would leave a few minutes for it to absorb before you put your clothes on.

The lip bomb's ingredients are also kept simple and easy: Beeswax, Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Organic Strawberry Oil

Some of the other flavours of Lip Bomb include: Mint Explosion, Vanilla Fuse, Cinnamon Sizzle, Pineapple Pow, Licorice Wick, Mint Cocoa Charge & Orange Blast - $4.00/each

Other Body Butters: Chocolate Espionage, Peppermint Vendetta & Restraining Order (Fragrance Free) - 50ml @ $9.98 150ml @ $19.98

Definitely worth trying and they feel and smell delicious...I actually kind of want to eat them lol!
About a mth ago I did a trial w/ my one upcoming bride Katherine for her May wedding. She had decided to schedule her engagement shoot the same day as the trial which I find can be a good thing as long as you don't mind having the same look for your shoot as your wedding.

Katherine wanted a grey black smokey eye and a fancy Kate Middleton inspired updo so I wanted to make sure it was okay for the shoot but she explained she was doing a fancy shoot in Yorkville so it actually all complimented itself perfectly.

Engagement shoots are the perfect time for couple's to get comfortable and practice in front of the camera as well as get to know their photographer. It's also a great chance to see how makeup reads differently on camera than it does in real life. The look you might have thought was super dramatic in person actually reads fairly natural on camera.

That's actually what Katherine decided after the shoot, She realized she wanted the eye more intense and the lips brighter which I'm more than happy to accommodate on the day. At the trial Katherine wasn't even sure she wanted to wear the fancy blue dress she had picked out for the shoot b/c she thought it might be a bit too much but I said you have fancy hair and makeup you have to have a fancy outfit...plus it's Yorkville!

I'm so glad she went w/ the dress b/c the pics are just gorgeous thanks to the awesome photography of Jessilynn Wong! Very excited to work w/ her on Katherine's wedding in May b/c if these pics are any indication of things I know the wedding pics will be amazing!

I do quite a bit of corporate work...I'd like to do more but overall with my experience I definitely say I understand the needs of corporate clients when it comes to makeup and hair. Unfortunately, not everyone understands the value of hiring a professional makeup artist for their corporate head shot shoot or video production.

A lot of times people in the corporate world don't understand the difference using a professional artist will make in their pictures and videos. It's not their fault. Typically, their work is about business or numbers or computers etc. Not exactly the most beauty focused fields lol. What exactly do they know about the benefits of hiring a professional makeup artist. That's why it's up to us as professionals to help educate them. In fact it actually holds a lot of the same principals and facts as to why brides should hire professionals are their day too!

I thought it might be smart to outline some of the important reasons and benefits as to why businesses should hire professional makeup artists for their photo or video needs.

Reasons to Hire a Professional Makeup Artist

1. Makeup Reads Differently On Camera - You may need more makeup than you typically wear day to day. A lot of women think that the makeup they put on for work is perfectly fine for pictures or videos but the camera takes away about 30% of the makeup. That's why you need to "up it" a bit but still look professional. A makeup artist will know how to keep you looking like you while still enhancing your look enough that it will show up on camera.

2. They Use Professional Camera Friendly Products - I'm sure it's obvious to most but not all makeup is created equally. A lot of consumer products are great for day to day use but they aren't necessarily "camera friendly" meaning they might create a flash back (white face) for pictures or just not be strong enough for film or pictures. A professional makeup artist will know what products work for what situation and will have a kit stocked with camera quality products that they've tried and tested out so they know exactly how they react and what works best depending on the lighting, setting and type of picture or video you're working on.

3. They Will Be Available For Touch Ups - When you hire a professional they will typically be just off camera and ready in case you need a lip touch up, powder for shine or to fix fly away hairs. Small things like this may not seem like a big deal at the time but they will be huge on camera and ultimately very distracting.

4. It's An Investment For Your Business - You are already investing so much into your pictures or video it only makes sense to make it the best you possibly can. There is not point in investing all of this money into a project if you're not going to look your best in it. If the star element of the picture or video doesn't look good it doesn't matter how much money was spent on the photographer/videographer or production value the project will ultimately look cheap and unpolished and I don't think anybody wants to have that as their last impression.

5. How Many People Will See These Pictures/Videos? - These pictures and videos will probably be around for a long time and hopefully be seen by thousands of people. It's important that the impression you leave people with is a good one. If you look disheveled or unpolished that's the impression you're going to leave clients or potential business contacts with. If you're going to use these pictures or videos for several years it's only smart to make them look the best and most
professional you can.

6. You'll Feel More Confident - When you hire a professional makeup artist they come to you. You don't have to worry about anything on the day with regards to your hair and makeup. The convenience of it all can't be beat and it can be a very relaxing and pampering experience to get your hair and makeup done which in turn can raise your confidence and reduce your anxiety which will both show on camera.

7. Men Need Makeup Too! - This is actually a big one! Most men don't realize the benefit of having their makeup done for photos or videos. It's true that day to day the average man does not wear makeup and because of that a lot of men see it as something only women need for pictures or film but that's not true. As mentioned above the camera picks up small details and magnifies them. A lot of men just like women have redness in their skin or dark circles under their eyes. These sorts of things can make a man look tired or unpolished on camera. Now of course the level of makeup needed on a man compared to a woman is very different but even just some concealing of redness or dark circles and a bit of powder foundation to reduce shine can make a a world of difference in photos.

8. It's More Affordable Than You Think - A lot of times budget and money are huge factors in this sort of thing but when you break it down the cost of hiring a professional makeup artist for your shoot or video is actually a small percentage of the total cost. Plus if you think hiring a professional is expensive imagine the costs if you need to do a re-shoot because the first shoot wasn't good enough!

Now like any professional or business there are different levels of skill and quality. It's important for people to do their research before hiring someone. Like the saying goes - "You think a professional is expensive, try hiring an amateur" ;)

So as anyone who reads this blog knows I do A LOT of weddings. Sometimes I do just makeup, sometimes it's just the hair and sometimes it's both makeup and hair. The more I do weddings and the more confident I get w/ both bridal makeup and hair I will be honest the more I enjoy having complete control over the entire look...that means being in charge of both the makeup and hair (at least for the bride).

Of course that is not always the case and I'm totally cool with that but I will say there has been more than one occasion where I have thought "Oh she would have looked better if she just let me do her makeup or her hair" when I haven't been in charge of both services.

A lot of times when I'm not booked for hair it's because the bride has opted to use her "Usual Stylist" for her wedding day hair. Now I'm not going to say that this is always a bad decision because it's not - there are plenty of salon hairstylists that are good at wedding updos and styling...but there are also a lot that aren't!

I think a lot of times brides feel "guilty" if they don't hire their regular hairstylist for their wedding day or they just assume they are a hair stylist and they cut/colour my hair great therefore they'll do my wedding hair great...but that's not always the case. Do not feel like you are "cheating" on your usual stylist if you don't use them on your wedding day.

So this isn't to say you shouldn't hire the person that cuts/colours your hair it's just important to ask some questions and make sure they'll be the right artist to achieve you wedding hair dream.

Here's some questions to ask or things to think about:

Do they do weddings often/Have they done a lot of weddings in the past? Ask your stylist this don't just assume they do. There are a lot of hairstylists nowadays that don't want to do weddings or almost never do weddings. Either because they don't like them or their specialty isn't updos or wedding styling.

How comfortable are they with Wedding Hairstyles? Some salon stylists are amazing and cut and/or colour but you ask them to do an updo or half updo and it's just not their forte. This doesn't make them a bad stylist it just means it's not one of their strengths. If they aren't strong in updos do you really want to risk their skills on your wedding day.

Are they willing to come to you on your Wedding Day? Weddings typically happen on Saturdays which of course is the busiest day in the salon. Are they willing to leave the salon for several hours to work your wedding w/ you and your bridal party or do you have to go to the salon?

If you have to go to the salon how will this effect your timing for your wedding day? Is this going to cause more stress or anxiety for you having to travel to and from the salon vs. getting your services in your home or a hotel where the artist comes to you? More and more brides are opting to have mobile services for this reason. It's just so much more stress free to have an artist or team come to you and your girls where you are!

If the stylist comes to you or you go to the salon what's the timing like? I've also seen several times where b/c the bride wants her usual stylist to do her hair she's had to get it done HOURS before the ceremony or pictures b/c that's the only time the stylist could fit her in. Either the stylist came to her and did it super early before their Saturday salon hours or the bride went to the salon super early in the morning. If you have an updo this might not be the end of the world as they are typically pretty sturdy if done properly but if you are wearing your hair down and you get it done hours before pictures or the ceremony you have a much stronger chance that they hair is going to fall and not look like you had hoped by time the ceremony comes around.

Remember to ALWAYS do a trial with your usual stylist! If you do want to use your usual stylist make sure to book a hair trial with them...don't just chance it and think they will do exactly what you want on the day b/c they are use to cutting/colouring your hair. I personally find even with my own work I do a better job on the hair the second time around. I figure out little adjustments and things I want to fix for the wedding day. The trial is as much a practice round for me as it is for the bride so it's VERY important!

If you aren't happy with the trial DON'T feel obligated to still use your regular stylist! I've seen and heard this time and time again. A bride does a trial w/ their stylist and they leave unhappy but then somehow magically hope/expect that their wedding day will turn out better. Speak up at your trial. If the stylist isn't getting your vision let them know so they can try to fix things they aren't mind readers lol! If they still don't get it and you are doubting they'll get it on the wedding day FIND ANOTHER STYLIST FOR THAT DAY!!! It's one of the most important days of your life and you're spending so much money on every detail you HAVE to hopefully LOVE...at least LIKE your hair! DO NOT stick w/ a stylist if you are judging their wedding hair skills. It will cause more stress for you and you'll actually resent them later if you hate your wedding hair.

Like I said above just b/c a stylist is amazing at cutting and colouring doesn't mean they understand or can execute wedding hairstyles. It's a VERY different skill set for a stylist and truthfully a lot of stylists don't get that much practice at it and it's not heavily taught in school.

I don't cut or colour hair but I specialize in wedding hair...you wouldn't want me to cut or colour your hair b/c it would be a disaster but I feel pretty confident doing your wedding updo lol!

I've had it happen multiple times where a bride who I was doing makeup for contact me after and ask to do a hair trial b/c her regular stylist just didn't seem to get her vision. I've also seen brides cry b/c they had their regular stylist do their hair while myself or my team has done their bridesmaids' hair and it's looked better. And of course I've seen salon hairstylists do work that's amazed me where I've wanted their card lol!

All I'm saying is think about what's right for you on your wedding day and don't feel obligated to make a choice b/c you feel pressure or a sense of loyalty if it's not what's right or convenient on your wedding day.

As I get older I'm more and more concerned w/ aging and the signs of aging showing up on my face in particular. So whenever I get the chance to try out new anti-aging products I of course jump on that. Awhile back I was asked to test out some new products from a company called Collection XXII who are based in Quebec but formulated in Switzerland. They are new to the anti-aging market just coming on the scene in 2009 w/ a single product. Since then they've taken the past 4 years to formulate 4 products in total and are continuing to develop more. I like when brands take time to develop and formulate a couple of good products vs. throwing a lot of mediocre products on the market just to create a "full line" to retail.

So all of their products are infused w/ their 4 "Secrets" which include: Collagen, Cavier, Gold & Grape Seed Oil.

Collagen - Helps skin's elasticity and helps prevent wrinkles. As we age collagen in the skin breaks down creating wrinkles, saggy skin and age spots.

Gold - Absorbs into the skin and creates a healthier glow. Collection XXII gold flakes help open up the pores which helps the collagen penetrate the skin which makes for a more effective treatment.

Cavier - Helps to speed up the natural production of collagen in the skin. It's also rich in vitamins A, D, B1, B2, and micro-elements Co, Cu, P, Si, Zn. Cavier extract helps firm the skin and provide optimal hydration.

Grape Seed Oil - Provides protection against sun damage and the astringent properties can tighten the skin. It can really help with things like acne, dermatitis and eczema. It also helps reduce age spots, stretch marks, sunburns and wrinkles.

The first product I got to try out was the Collagen Eye Mask XXII. The patch targets the delicate area under the eyes and it helps reduce wrinkles, fine lines and diminish dark circles and puffiness. Pretty much issues all women (and men) face. I really liked these patches and definitely felt that they were hydrating to the eye area. I can't speak about any long term results as I only had the one set of patches to try the one time but I definitely felt like the skin around the eye was softer and more moisturized. I'd definitely use these on or recommend these to brides on their wedding day. A lot of brides don't get a lot of sleep before their wedding so I think a product like this would be great for moisturizing and de-puffing the eye area which would allow for better and smooth makeup application after.

I also got the chance to try Collagen Lip Mask XXII. This patch also reduces fine lines and wrinkles by softening and hydrating the skin. I had never used a patch like this before so this was unique to me. Again like the eye patch I found it very hydrating. I don't personally have a lot of wrinkles around the mouth area so I don't know if it would benefit me in that way but I imagine for someone who is a smoker something like this might be very beneficial to them as they tend to develop more or premature wrinkles around the mouth area.

Last November I had the pleasure of working with Rebecca...probably one of the kindest and sweetest brides I had last season. Right away during the trial we hit it off and actually had a few hidden connections! We actually both studied Theatre at York University but didn't know each other b/c we were in different sections of the program and she was a year younger than me plus my friend Victoria actually stayed w/ her mom when Victoria was touring her one woman show this past Summer in London! Not only that but when Rebecca spoke of her fiance Stephen she mentioned he was a Dramaturg at Young People's Theatre and I nodded my head...she asked if I knew what that was and I did (b/c of my theatre background...this was before we realized we both went to York lol)...I'm probably one of the only makeup artists (or non theatre ppl) to know what a dramaturg is so we definitely had a chuckle over that and she joked her fiance would want her to hire me just on that face alone lol! Btw a dramaturg is someone who deals mainly with the research and development of plays and operas.

So right off the top we obviously got along great...plus the trial went superbly (of course) so she locked down the day right away! Which was actually great for her as I had a few brides interested in the date (and I actually ended up doing two weddings that day)...yes even in November ppl are getting married in Toronto!

Rebecca and Stephen's whole weddings was so unique and perfect for them and I really loved that aspect of it! They actually met while working at Young People's Theatre and even though Rebecca no longer works there Stephen still does so they actually got to use the space for some of their wedding pictures and ceremony which they got to do on the stage! How perfect is that for two people working in the theatre world! I believe the show that season was To Kill A Mocking Bird so the courtroom stage set up was pretty perfect for a wedding ceremony lol!

For Rebecca's look I created a really beautiful side updo w/ a few small accent braids and overall I was really happy w/ how full I made her hair look b/c it was actually pretty fine in reality. For her makeup we did a gorgeous natural champagne/brown eye w/ a winged liner and flared false lash and made the look really pop w/ a nice bold vibrant magenta lip!

I really love these pics that Mike Pochwat took b/c I felt he did a great job capturing some wonderful behind the scenes moments as well as the uniqueness of Rebecca and Stephen as a couple! Can't wait to add these to my site!

On a final note I should add that Rebecca also wrote one of the kindest and most detailed reviews I've ever read...seriously!...how nice is that!?!

Short Version: Jessica is amazingly talented , and I think everyone should hire her!

Long Version:

I booked her for hair and make-up services for myself and my bridal party for my November 1, 2014 wedding. She was absolutely amazing, and I am so glad she was able to work my wedding. She made my wedding party and me look absolutely stunning. She created a look for me that was both natural and dramatic/vintage glam, which was exactly what I wanted and perfectly fit with the look and feel of my wedding.

My bridal party was completely composed of people who never ever wear make-up, and Jessica ensured that everyone had a natural look. She was also able to calm their fears of looking overly made-up (fears which were completely alleviated when they looked in the mirror). My make-up artist cousin raved about how everyone looked.

Beyond the looks, Jessica is utterly professional. She was always quick to respond to emails and provided me with thorough, detailed information. Jessica and her assistant were also amazing presences to have around on the wedding day. In addition to raving about their skill, my bridal party raved about what awesome people they were and what a great energy the added to the day. Honestly, it was like adding two more friends to the room. I really feel that Jessica and Amber helped me relax as I was getting ready.

Not only would I recommend Jessica to a friend, I loved her work (and her) so much, I plan to treat myself to future stylings when I have a special event. Why should my wedding day be the only day I look that good?

A few mths ago I had the pleasure of attending an awesome blogger event at the Miracle 10 Skincare Spa in Yorkville. During the event we got to learn about the latest in skincare and makeup trends as well as have your own skin analyzed and assessed by the Miracle 10 skincare specialists. At the end of the event we all received full size bottles of the Miracle 10 skincare system based on our skin type and needs. We also were lucky enough to get a complimentary skin peel to be booked on another day! So overall I have to say a pretty awesome event w/ some pretty awesome swag!

I went away to Central America for 3 wks right after the event so I didn't want to start using the skincare system until I got back. Plus I had to wait until the New Year to book my first peel b/c I was going to be in the sun a lot on my trip and you can't do a peel if you're going to be/or have been in the sun a lot.

For products in our gift bag we got to try out:

Cleanser - Cleansing dirt, oil, makeup etc. from the skin
Solution - For exfoliating and toning the skin
Sunscreen - Water and Sweat resistant, non-comedogenic (won't clog pores) and offers protection against premature aging and sun damage
AHA Gel - Advanced exfoliator that reduces build up of dead, lifeless skin. Helps brighten the skin and improve the overall tone and texture of the skin - probably my fav. product in the system - also please be aware it may cause a bit of burning or itching when it's first applied (at least it does for me)
Light Serum - Hydrates and Soothes the skin. Also helps to reduce fine lines and doesn't leave a greasy residue which is great for oily skin

So as you can see they were MORE than GENEROUS with their swag bag! Also, feel free to check out their FAQs - it has lots of great answers about the products!

Anyone who reads this blog knows I do not have great skin...in fact especially considering my age I'd say it's quite problematic :( and I'm not going to lie here...it took about a mth for my skin to get use to the system and during that time my skin actually got worse...like a lot worse than it's been in ages! So bad that when I went to get my peel the woman giving it actually called in another esthetician to get a second opinion on some of the very deep/painful pimples I was getting. They both agreed that I should stick w/ the system as it was probably just really deep cleaning my skin and pulling out/drawing the the surface a lot of the dirt, congestion and bacteria that's deep within my skin.

My skin has improved a lot since that first peel. In fact I've now had 3 peels at the clinic and I really like what it's doing for my skin!

I've never actually had a peel before a couple of mths ago so it was a really cool process to me and my esthetician was great about talking me through all the steps and explaining what each step was for and the benefits of it. I actually just had another peel yesterday and this time I took some pics and video of the process (which is also why there was a delay in my post...I wanted to wait till I had another peel).

It first started w/ cleansing of the skin and then next we did an optional (but actually my favourite) step called dermaplaning - it's an exfoliation treatment where a very fine blade is run over the face in order to remove dead skin and fine vellus hair (peach fuzz). Afterward, I do find my makeup goes on the skin smoother and no you don't have to worry about hair growing back thicker or coarser on the face.

I actually took a short video of the procedure which you can see here!

After that the peel is applied to the skin. I started w/ the most gentle lactic peel but last time I did the 30% Glycolic Peel..my skin is red for a bit after the procedure but it's nothing a little makeup can't fix. And it's not that painful. A little stingy but it's only on for a minute and w/ the fan blowing on my face I personally don't find it that bad at all.

After that a soothing and hydrating mask is placed on the skin which is very cooling and relaxing after the peel.

After that they do this sort of neat dry ice type thing which is anti-inflammatory and helps disinfects the area...in this pic you'll see the "redness" from the peel.

I've already got my next peel booked at the Yorkville Miracle 10 Spa...definitely worth checking out!

Last week I wrote about the beautiful engagement shoot my former bride Kim had last Fall so I figured it only right to share with you some of her gorgeous wedding pics from her Winter Wedding in Distillery District this past December!

Distillery District is always a popular destination for Toronto brides as it's one of the few places in the city that captures a sort of old world feel w/ it's cobblestone paths and brick buildings while still being very centrally located in the city!

Christmas time can be an especially fun time in Distillery District as it's also when they host their very popular Christmas Market. This can be good and bad of course for weddings. It can make for some very crowded and difficult picture moments but I have to hand it to Caitlin Free she did an amazing job with that! In fact to see more pictures from Kim's wedding check out Caitlin's blog where she features lots of outdoor shots. I really love how Kim worked her love of nature into her bouquet and wedding decorations. It all had a very earthy and woodsy feel which was perfect for a Winter Wedding!

As I mentioned before Kim was a very natural bride and I actually went even more natural on the wedding day (as per her request). I kept the eye makeup very light using only soft pink shadows and smudged brown liner. I was able to convince her in the end to go w/ a few false individual lashes...thankfully...didn't want her bridesmaids outshining her lol ;) We stuck w/ the airbrush foundation which really did create a flawless, light and airy canvas and covered up all the natural redness in her skin. I love the soft, flushed glow on her cheeks and natural nude/pink lip.

I didn't do the hair for Kim but I did handle all the bridesmaids' makeup and my team member Becca did the bridemaids' hair. Really fun group and a great bunch to spend a nice Dec. Sat morning with. I really love the pics Caitlin took...seriously check out her blogpost...I told her she should submit them somewhere lol!

I've mentioned before I think engagement shoots are a really important part of the whole wedding process. I know a lot of couples don't see the value or importance of the added cost but I often explain it as a "practice run" before the wedding day.

Most ppl aren't comfortable or "naturals" in front of the camera so it allows them to practice and get a feel for what it's going to be like on the wedding day...and it's typically a lot more intimate and less chaotic than the wedding day so that can be good too!

Plus it allows the couple to get to know the photographer and vice versa. You guys get to feel comfortable w/ each others styles/personalities and you (as the couple) get to see what works for you in posing and what you might what to talk to your photographer about or change up for the wedding day.

I also think it's really important when planning an engagement shoot to try to capture the essence of you as a couple. If you like the outdoors incorporate that into the shoot, if you're big on city life and that sort of thing do a cityscape shoot...whatever it is it should try to capture your personalities.

Hair and makeup are of course an important element of the shoot too. Now that doesn't mean every bride should get their hair and makeup done for the shoot but if it's within their budget I'd definitely recommend it as I find it really worth it.

For my one bride Kim who did her engagement shoot in the Fall she was able to do her makeup trial before her engagement shoot. Now this doesn't always work out b/c of scheduling but it did on this day. I'm really glad it did too b/c she really got to put the trial to good use and I in turn got some gorgeous engagement shoot pics to show you guys!

Just like getting use to the photographer and how you look in front of the camera seeing the makeup in person and seeing the makeup on camera can often take some getting use to. Kim was a NO MAKEUP person so any makeup pretty much felt like a lot to her. She actually thought the makeup in her engagement photos was too much...I'm pretty sure you'll disagree but this often happens with brides who aren't use to makeup. I think brides that don't normally wear makeup will find it even more useful to hire a makeup artist for their engagement shoots than brides that do wear makeup b/c they'll make sure they look fresh and polished for their pics at a level they probably wouldn't be able to do on their own since they don't know how to do makeup at all lol...let alone for professional pictures!

As mentioned before Kim is a very "natural" girl so it only made sense for her and her (now husband) Kyle to get back to nature for the engagement shoot. They did their shoot in the woods and on a lake in a canoe and the pictures by Caitlin Free are just gorgeous!

As mentioned before for Kim's makeup I kept it super natural and soft w/ a very natural brown/cream shadow combination, a flushed cheek and a soft nude lip. I used airbrush foundation which was great for evening out Kim's naturally reddish complexion but still keeping it looking flawless and lightweight!

I think you'll agree with me kind of impossible to say this is "too much makeup" lol...I love these pics and I think they look natural and gorgeous and really capture the couple beautifully!

A couple of wks ago I had the pleasure of doing the makeup and hair for Award Winning Wedding Photographer Lisa Mark's first workshop. You may remember we worked together in the Fall on that beautiful styled shoot on the cliff that showcased the changing of the leaves. She put this workshop together to help newer photographers see and learn some of her tricks and techniques for lighting wedding shots during the day and night.

I thought this would also be a fun opportunity for me to do what I wanted with a "bride" (since normally I obviously have to do what they want lol). The couple for the day was real life couple Andrea & Billy and they were really lovely and great sports b/c it was a REALLY long day and I'm sure tiring to be modeling for Lisa + 10 students for both the Day & Night Portion of the workshop (they agreed to do the whole day after the original night time couple cancelled). It also was a great opportunity for them as Lisa was booked on their real wedding day so I guess getting these pictures is kind of like the next best thing lol!

For the day look I wanted to work w/ pinks and grays on the eyes. I wanted to keep it soft and glowy b/c I knew I was going to go a lot more dramatic for the night portion. The cooler tones worked beautiful w/ Andrea's pale skin and dark hair. Airbrush foundation was used to create her flawless complexion. For the hair I wanted it loose w/ curls pulled to one side. I never met Andrea before but I knew from the pics I saw she was going to need extensions to get the fullness and length I wanted. And can I just say without meeting her I did an amazing job choosing the colour for the extensions lol! They were a PERFECT match! I got a couple of nice pics from Lisa and one of the other photographers at the shoot Johanne Guignard (who probably took my fav beauty shots that day).

For the night look I wanted something much more dramatic as I knew the lighting was going to be very dark. I think Andrea was a little scared at first by the intensity but once the lights went down in the studio she realized it all made sense...which is something I'm constantly trying to explain to clients when it comes to a more intense look at the reception lol! I went w/ a sophisticated side updo. Bold grey/black smokey eye and a deep berry red lip. I personally believe in dark lighting and w/ the right features/skin tone there is no reason a person can't rock both a bold lip and intense eye. It's definitely not a look for the shy or meek but it's personally something I wear on the regular when going out.

So overall some nice additions for my website!

I thought since I did blogs about some of my fav hairstyles I created for last year's brides it only right to do a blog post about some of my favourite makeup looks! Especially considering I am a makeup artist first, hairstylist second...although sometimes you wouldn't know that by the amount of brides I have contacting me to just do hair sometimes lol!

One thing that has always been a constant in my bridal business is brides hire me b/c they are looking for that "Natural, Soft, Glowing" look. Very clean and very pretty! For the most part my brides DO NOT want to wear or look like they are wearing a lot of makeup! The thing is that to create those looks I often have to educate brides about the face that they do in fact STILL NEED TO WEAR MAKEUP!!! More makeup then they are probably use to lol...especially considering it seems like about 75% of my clientele were minimal to no makeup for the most part lol! When I'm interviewing staff it's actually one of the things I have to stress to them is that my clientele for the most part wants a "NATURAL LOOK"...even if they are showing me Kim K. pictures I gotta ask them questions and determine what in fact they are actually looking for (99% of the time it's not Kim K let me tell you lol)!

It's actually funny/frustrating (depends on my mood lol) how much convincing I sometimes I have to do w/ clients to make them realize they are in fact not wearing that much makeup and it's not "too much". My day look is often more than they will let me put on them for their wedding lol (and I don't get glam day to day fyi). I actually don't know a bridal artist who has a lighter hand than I do when it comes to understanding the approach of less is more...a lot of times I do actually think my clients could use a bit more "drama" but I do have to respect their wishes and comfort level of course.

With that said I do still get to create some beautiful makeup looks and I do really have some beautiful clients. I think one of things that really helps when doing a natural look is that I pretty much insist on some sort of false lash whether it be strip or individual lashes. I've mentioned this before but I include this not only for the bride but anyone getting makeup services (and my staff do too). I think when you are doing a "natural look" it really is one of the best ways to make the eyes pop w/out the use of a lot of shadow and if I do get the chance to do a "glam look" it's of course necessary otherwise to me the look just seems unfinished!

I definitely see a rise in the amount of airbrush foundation I'm doing on brides this past season! I got a new airbrush compressor/gun this year and I have to say I'm actually really loving airbrush a lot more than I use to! I don't know if it's the new machine or just me getting more skilled but I'm loving the finish, the lightness on the skin and the coverage it provides...plus my makeup phobic brides are really loving the fact that it still feels like "there is nothing on the skin" even though it gives them that flawless finish!

Adrianna is a classic example of "Pretty & Soft" Wedding Makeup! I used airbrush foundation on her and I'm still obsessed w/ her updo lol! Photos courtesy of Azure Blue Photography

I did a return visit for Adrianna which is getting more popular with brides. I changed up her lip to a bold red lip and smoked out the eyes a bit more! It was the perfect addition for the evening look. Making it a bit more "glam" but not over the top or "too much"

Of course I have to mention Brittany when I'm talking about some of my fav makeup looks for last season! She actually let me do a bronzy/brown/black smokey eye on her and give her a little drama. The funny thing is that I'm always trying to explain to brides is it doesn't look that much in the pictures at all! In fact it looks like the perfect amount...in person it didn't look "too much" either btw...but it's all about comfort level.

Martha was so pretty! A natural beauty, so of course we kept the makeup natural too! Glowing cheek, soft pink lip and a neutral smokey eye! I loved the textured updo for her so much! Photo courtesy of Reid Lampshead

There probably isn't a bride I was more happy w/ how the makeup turned out on than Melanie.Though the look is natural Melanie had a lot of skin concerns and issues in the form of acne, scarring, redness and dry patches. As someone who has/still does suffer from acne and other skin issues I understand the stress and confidence issues it can cause. I'm so happy I was able to create such a beautiful canvas for her so that her beautiful features and blue eyes could be the focus that day! Her wedding photographer - Yuki Noda actually said it was some of the best wedding makeup she had seen - Big compliment indeed! Airbrush foundation used!

Of course I have to include my friend Sophia on the list! She's gorgeous this was an easy one lol! Her brother kept saying how beautiful her makeup was all night!

Okay well this wasn't actually a wedding I did but it was for a mock wedding photo shoot. What was great about this is both I and the photographer understand the level of makeup necessary to create a good photo so of course I got to up it a bit more than a lot of my brides will let me do. The results are gorgeous and I really love this copper/bronze/brown smokey eye! Airbrush foundation used. Photos courtesy of Lisa Mark Photography

To close it out here's a couple of brides I never did get photos from but I still REALLY love their makeup looks...sad I don't I have good pics of them :( I'm thinking of adding a section on my website for snapshots b/c I don't like to mix non professional pics w/ the professional pics but it's disappointing to not share work you love or if the photographer didn't take any beauty shots of the bride (gasp...NEVER understand this one!!!)

On my first date w/ my boyfriend he commented that I had amazing brows. I was happy as EVERY makeup artist is pretty much obsessed w/ brows and it's basically like giving one of the biggest compliments ever lol BUT I also felt a tinge of deceit b/c they weren't really my brows. I mean they were of course but I filled them in quite a bit to get the shape and arch I liked...w/out makeup they were definitely not the well sculpted pieces of work above my eyes lol!

Years of over tweezing and waxing in the 90s (when thin brows were in...the last time, hopefully forever thin brows will be in lol) had left my sad little brows w/ holes and starting to far apart. Now my brows weren't awful and since becoming a makeup artist I've definitely learned how to fix them and make them acceptable on a daily basis but of course that required makeup so it kind of excluded me from things like "no makeup" pics...w/out thinking I looked awful of course lol...I even filled them in if I was going swimming or on vacation backpacking. Literally, even if I wasn't going to wear makeup I would still fill in my brows lol!

So when I heard about eyebrow extensions two weeks ago for the first time on Instagram I pretty much jumped for joy! Immediately I started looking up where in Toronto I could get this magic service! That's when I found Winks Eyelash Boutique in Yorkville (very close to me - bonus!) I reached out to Winks and asked if it was possible to maybe try out brow extensions in exchange for a blog review (hey it has its benefits being a blogger ;) ) and they immediately responded saying Yes and on top of that they would give me lash extensions too! Bonus!! Apparently they've been big in Europe for awhile but are just gaining popularity in North America now...I don't know what took us so long lol!

So on Weds I went to Winks for my appt. Mei applied my eyelash and eyebrow extensions and she was friendly and answered all of my questions and helped me decide which lashes would be best for me. I had had lash extensions before but this was actually a much more relaxing experience for me. She gave me a neck pillow and the chair reclined slightly so it was all very relaxing. Plus, I don't know if she was just more gentle than the last person but my eyes weren't sore like last time during and after which was definitely a good thing!

Mei did my lashes first and she was very quick and gave me a very nice (not too insanely dramatic) lash w/ a sort of cat eye effect which is what I like when I wear false lashes too! I do like lash extensions but for myself personally they aren't something I'd keep up all the time. I naturally have pretty long lashes and I'm very good at putting on false lashes so I just don't personally see the point for the cost but I would consider them before a vacation or if I was getting married or something. I definitely do understand why some ppl get them all the time though...especially ppl w/ short/sparse lashes like a lot of Asian girls.

But the BROW EXTENSIONS!!! That's something I might just keep up with! Basically I have my dream right now! Brows that don't need to be filled in and are naturally arched! I really couldn't be happier about the whole thing! As someone who has struggled with her brows for years this literally was a revelation for me.

As I mentioned before I don't have the worst brows and I do actually have brow hair it's just they start too far apart and they need filling a bit on the end and underneath to create the arch. This actually makes the brow extensions easier for me b/c they can be attached to the hair I actually do have as well as to the skin in spots where there is no hair.

Brow extensions are not the same hair as lash extensions btw. They are shorter and finer and of course come in a variety of colours to match your own brows. Mine are dark brown. They are very similar to lash extensions in how you care for them though. You shouldn't get them wet for the first 24 hrs and you can't use oil makeup removers on them b/c they will deteriorate the glue. They will unfortunately need more maintenance then lash extensions (fills every 2 wks most probably) b/c often they are attached to the skin and not just the hair that is already there making them a little more delicate and not as "stuck" as lash extensions.

I'm not going to lie I do feel like I have/want to be pretty delicate with them. If you are someone who rubs their eyes or brow area a lot lash and brow extensions wouldn't be good for you. I'd also be very careful when washing your face. I use to scrub my face in the shower but while I have these I'll only wash my face at my sink where I can look in the mirror and be precise were I'm washing and scrubbing so I can avoid the brow area b/c I do think they could fall out pretty easily :(

Because they require a bi-monthly maintenance they definitely aren't the cheapest beauty habit to keep up but if you're someone like me who is very obsessed with their brows and don't mind indulging in a little beauty luxury then you might find the cost worth it. The results really are insane no one would know they aren't your brows trust me!

Cost varies at different places of course and I imagine it probably varies depending on the amount of reconstruction work has to go into the brows - whether it's just filling in holes or basically constructing a whole new brow for a client. But it's definitely a beauty trend I'm happy to have discovered and keep up with!

Thanks again Winks Eyelash Boutique I couldn't be happier w/ the results! Can't wait to share this info w/ my clients!

Earlier this wk I shared w/ you some of my fav updos that I created for my wonderful clients this year. So it only makes sense to share some of my fav half updo and down hairstyles of this past season.

In the past it was very much the norm and expected that brides wear their hair in updos on their wedding day. Trends have definitely changed over the past few years and I for one am very happy about that. For one hair for the most part is not about being stiff or "helmet" like. Even with updos brides (at least mine) tend to want styles that are are a lot softer, more loose and romantic in style.

I think this soft, undone done hair trend has been part of the reason down hairstyles have gotten more popular in recent years. No matter how it's styled there does tend to be a softer look when hair is left down.

Also, with the rise in popularity of clip-in hair extensions down hairstyles are becoming a lot more of a possibility for brides that may in the past have not been able to pull of the style. Truth is when you see pictures of girls on Pinterest w/ big loose curls I'd say 90% of the time (especially if they are photo shoot/model/actor type pics) these women are wearing some sort of hair extensions. It's very rare for a girl to be able to have really long, thick hair that holds amazing curl and style naturally...for those blessed few we call them hair models ;) ...for the rest of us hair extensions are the answer lol!

Luckily for my brides I also make clip-in extensions so they never have to worry about the hassle of matching and buying their own extensions b/c if they don't know what they are looking for or where to go it can all be a little overwhelming...and the last things brides need is another thing to worry about ;)

So here's some of my fav half up or down hairstyles from this past wedding season!

Of course if I'm talking about beautiful hair I gotta include my "Barbie" bride Brittany. We did add extensions to her hair..not so much for length but more for volume and thickness. Photos courtesy of Stephanie Amoroso

This is probably one of my fav accessories to date. It was so unique and it just accentuated and worked w/ the style so well! Crazy thing was she borrowed it!

Personally I've found it to be a bit of a wive's tale that Asian hair doesn't curl. Yes, naturally a lot of times it is naturally straight but I've also found b/c it's often very thick and coarse it can create some gorgeous down hairstyles that hold VERY well. Diane was a perfect example of this. Her hair held beautifully and was gorgeous, long and thick! Photos courtesy of Jennifer Moher

Rasha was another bride I made extensions for. Funny thing was we did her trial like a year in advance so on the wedding day she was having some doubts about the style we did at the trial. I ended up taking the half updo style down and just leaving it all down and it looked gorgeous and full!

Amie was another bride w/ gorgeous thick hair. We did a classic half updo w/ loose curls. Her hair held so well I actually felt comfortable running my fingers through the curls to loosen them...there's a lot of brides I wouldn't dare try that with for fear that their curls would fall right out lol!

I'm so sad I don't have professional shots from Gabby's wedding. Seriously, the nicest set of extensions I've ever made for a bride. Love how seamlessly they blended in and the colour matched..even all the highlights!

Eva was probably my "nicest" and "sweetest" bride last year. Seriously the girl was just so sweet...like genuinely sweet!

Stephanie was another bride I made extensions for. Blonde hair w/ all it's highlights always photographs so nicely and choosing the right colour extensions w/ the right highlights is especially important! Wish I had professional pics of her...so pretty!

Last year I did a post where I looked back at some of my fav. hairstyles/make up looks from the previous wedding season. I really liked the post and thought it was a great way to share w/ my readers some of the creative and beautiful hairstyles I got a chance to create last year.

One thing for sure I'm really loving the fact that a lot of bride's are now incorporating extensions into updos as well...not just down hairstyles (where it's often necessary to create volume and length). When using extensions in updos it's often not length that we need more of it's the volume. To create a lot of those big bun or elaborate updos you just need a lot of hair...and let's be real not everyone has it naturally lol!

Can't wait to see what new and awesome hairstyles I'll get the chance to create on this year's crop of brides and bridesmaids!

LOVED LOVED LOVED this updo I created for Adrianna - we did add additional clip in extensions to get the volume and fullness for the style. Photos courtesy Azure Blue Photography

Erin changed her hairstyle right at the last minute as her original hair idea was a lot more smooth and sleek. I'm so glad she did b/c this style was so much better for her features and dress! Loved the few loose pieces we left around the face and her hair piece. Photos courtesy of Avenue Photography

Kadie had so much hair to work with! It was wonderful for this full curly updo! Loved the addition of the headband.

Lanette naturally has very thin, fine hair so I was really happy w/ the amount of volume and fullness I was able to achieve in this curly side updo style. Photos courtesy of Taylor Roades

I worked with Laurel on another wedding a few years prior to hers so I was so happy when she contacted me for her wedding. Loved this smooth, layered low bun we created for the day. Photos courtesy of Jer Wilcocks

I'm really into creating soft, romantic, textured updos and I think this updo for Lori really captured exactly what my style is all about. So pretty! Photos courtesy of Renaissance Studios

Loved Bailey's soft curly, messy bun! Her hair wasn't super long but sometimes brides are surprised w/ how much we can achieve even w/ shorter hair. Her hair was thick though so that definitely helped! Photos courtesy of Meghan Andrews

Martha had thinner, finer hair but doing doing a tighter curl and then running the fingers through the hair to create the tousled, textured and fuller look really worked great. Plus I loved her headband so much! And the fact that that she left some pieces out around her face. Photos courtesy of Reid Lampshead.

Sophia's hair was another updo where I added extensions. Her hair wasn't that long and it's super baby fine so extensions were definitely necessary! Photos courtesy of Diane at DNA Weddings

With finer hair adding this flower was a great idea to create the illusion of bigger, fuller updo.

I love working a braid into an updo sometimes.

Again this was another updo where the bride had shorter hair but I was still able to create a really nice full updo. Photos courtesy of Little Blue Lemon

I have to say I've tried a few things from the Hourglass Cosmetics so far and I've LOVED everything I've tried thus far. I've loved their products so much that I thought it was worth writing about AND they don't have a Pro Discount (well they have one for US artists but not Canada :( ) so that means I've been paying FULL PRICE...something I pretty much NEVER do...so if that doesn't say something I don't know what does lol!

It is a "luxury" brand and therefore at a bit higher price range than some brands but the quality is there so I think it's worth it. Plus when it comes to things like foundation I think investing money on good products is never a waste! They have been around for just over 10 years and from what I know they've been in Sephora (where I get my Hourglass products) for at least a few years now. I really love that they are a cruelty free brand and many of the products are vegan and produced w/out gluten, parabans, phthalates, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, GMOS, Triclosan and nonoparticles ...very important for a lot of ppl these days!

I originally got introduced to the brand when I was sent a Nude Lip Stylo to review. Right away I really liked that the brand had many different colours of nude lip stylos...often ppl don't realize that one shade of nude isn't right for everyone and ppl w/ darker skin tones often have to go darker in nudes than they might initially realize. It was a great product and I love the chubby stick pencils for lipsticks these days as they are very easy to apply and fill in...especially if you're on the go!

One of the biggest products for the brand and probably the one that has made them the most well known has been their primer. I've never actually bought a full size version of it but have tried samples. It's good but the funny thing is it's not my fav. product by them lol!

Next I think I got another mini rouge liquid lipstick in Icon w/ one of my Sephora orders. Immediately I loved it! Went on matte/opaque and was a gorgeous red...one that I think would look good on almost anyone! Very smooth and easy to apply and very long lasting! I think it was after this that I really started to take notice and look at the other products the brand had to offer.

After hearing a lot of buzz about it I decided to invest in one of their pricier items - The Ambient Lighting Palette! I'm obsessed w/ a nice glowy cheek for my clients so I thought this would be a gorgeous addition to my kit and I was definitely not wrong! Goes on so smooth and seamlessly blends into the skin. Creates a gorgeous glow - not too sparkly or shimmery. All 3 powders would be universally flattering on pretty much anyone and the product is definitely good for both day and evening looks!

After this I was pretty much hooked so when Sephora released an Ambient Light Blush Palette for VIB members I knew I had to give it a try...and of course I was not let down. Gorgeous finish and colour - Peach, Pink, Plum blushes. I really love how smooth and buildable all the products are...never cakey or powdery looking. I would say though this product probably wouldn't be suitable for darker skin tones as I don't think it would show up.

Finally after all of this and being a die hard Cover FX foundation user on myself I decided to try out their Liquid Powder Foundation. Anyone who reads this blog knows I have oily and acne prone skin so the idea that a foundation was oil absorbing, buildable coverage and had a matte/velvet finish all sounded pretty good to me. The "secret" ingredient is Cashmere Kaolinite Clay which has been shown to absorb 75% of it's weight in sebum while still retaining moisture in the skin. I personally like to apply the product w/ a damp beauty blender and tap/bounce the product into the skin. One of the first days I was wearing it another artist commented how great my skin looked...umm right there I guess we can say I was sold! When another artist comments your skin/foundation looks great you know you have a winner!

So yeah I guess you can say I'm a fan of the brand. Haven't tried anything I didn't like...and I've even been paying full price :S If anything all I have to say is Hourglass bring your Pro Discount to Canada!!! Definitely worth checking out the products though if you don't mind investing in good quality makeup!
Whenever one of my friends are getting married it makes that special day a little more exciting for me. Of course I love seeing all my brides looking beautiful on their wedding days but obviously when it's a close friend it's a little more personal and exciting to be part of it.

This past September one of my oldest friends Sophia got married so of course I offered I'm my makeup and hair services on her special day! I must say overall I'm really lucky...I have a really attractive group of friends so anytime one of them gets married I know the pictures are going to be a great addition to my site and of course Sophia's wedding was no different.

Sophia got ready at the Thompson Hotel and married at Spoke Club which is just around the corner. We were a little nervous about the weather but it ended up being a gorgeous and fabulous evening and her intimate rooftop ceremony was so beautiful.

For her look I wanted to keep it really soft and beautiful. Sophia is a natural beauty w/ gorgeous pale skin so that makes my job pretty easy lol! I did a natural smokey eye, flushed cheek and soft nude pink lip. I used airbrush on her skin just b/c I'm really loving the flawless finish these days and the durability of it.

For her hair we added in some clip-in extensions for her undone updo b/c her natural hair was a bit short and too fine to achieve the look we were after. It was accented beautifully w/ a flower I pinned into the back of the updo.
Obviously I don't typically have curls in my hair on the job lol! Also...man I look short next to my tall friend in her heels...this is why I almost always wear heels lol!

Back in August I had the pleasure of working with a beautiful bride named Lori. I knew after the trial that I was definitely going to be hounding her for pictures after her wedding day! And once I finally got the pics earlier this month I knew all my emailing was worth it! Lori sent me the full gallery to look through which to me is always awesome b/c then I can pick and choose the pics I like most...brides don't always realize what I'm looking for in a picture or why I think a particular picture is good.

Let me just say there were SO MANY amazing pictures...seriously I'm going to show you a bunch in this post but I could have picked at least 10 more! It's hard to pick even just a couple for my site! Well done Renaissance Studios Photography! Lori mentioned possibly submitted the pics to some various places for publication and I really hope she does b/c they are gorgeous...of course the ones I'm going to show focus primarily on the makeup and hair but there were a ton of great pics! It of course doesn't hurt that both Lori and her husband are super good looking lol!

For Lori's look we decided to do a gorgeous side updo w/ lots of curls and twirls for texture and it paired perfectly with her fascinator veil. For the makeup Lori let me get a little bit dramatic on the eyes which I always enjoy. I did a gold/bronze/brown smokey eye accented w/ a bit of black and full black liner (which is something she does every day anyway so she felt "naked" with out it). Always important to ask brides if they have anything makeup wise they do every day...especially when it comes to eye liner! Lori was super tanned so it paired beautifully w/ the more dramatic eye style and the airbrush foundation looked flawless on her. All her bridesmaids were super pretty girls too making my day especially easy lol!
