Private Makeup Lessons - Great Holiday Gift, Great Personal Investment!

In the last year I've seen a surge in the amount of Private Makeup Lessons I give to women.  I think in part this has to do w/ the fact that I advertise the service on my Wedding Site but also b/c a lot of women are coming to realize that they know very little about makeup and in fact many are even scared of it but they do realize its importance in society...esp. in the professional sector.

The mere idea of hiring someone to teach you makeup seems like a fairly modern and new concept to a lot of people out there.  It's actually funny b/c so many women initially have trouble grasping the concept of investing in someone to teach them how to apply makeup b/c it is "just makeup" after all but then if you were to ask them many of these same women would express how "scared" they are of makeup and doing it "wrong".  I mean I remember when I was a teen I don't remember any sort of thing like this being available (and there def. wasn't YouTube around back then w/ tutorials and advice).  Plus, I find with many women makeup tips and skills are initially learned through the mothers and if the mother never wore makeup then it's more likely that these women never really started wearing or experimenting w/ makeup themselves.

So as the holidays are fast approaching it got me thinking about what a unique and thoughtful gift it might be to invest in a Private Makeup Lesson for your wife, sister, daughter, girlfriend, mother etc...basically any woman in your life lol!  I can almost guarantee no one else would be getting that person the same thing plus it really shows a lot of thought and people love when they get gifts that are "outside the box" and experiential gifts!  Plus how cool would it be for a lot of women to have a professional makeup artist come to their house and personally teach them "tricks and secrets" of the pros!

There are SO MANY women out there that LOVE makeup but are just too scared to try it themselves...or they have drawers and drawers of makeup that's going to waste b/c they don't know what to do w/ it.  With a private lesson a woman would learn what works exactly for her and how to apply makeup specifically for her features and face.  Plus she'd learn what specific products or brushes she should be investing in which for a lot of women would actually save money as they wouldn't be buying tons of makeup that either didn't work for them or they didn't know what to do with.

It's also a great idea for young girls that are newly getting into makeup.  I know we've all seen those young girls that are ruining their beautiful young faces w/ too thin brows and too much eyeliner.  Why not have someone teach them the basics and good techniques from the start so they don't have to look back on their teens years 10 years from now and think "What was I thinking?" lol!

Also, for any women out their reading this and thinking they might want a lesson...go for it!  Give a gift to yourself sometime!  I'm all about giving gifts for myself lol...especially when I was a single lady (b/c let's be real no one else was doing it)!  I often talk to my clients about this being an investment into one's self.  I honestly believe knowing how to apply a basic day look style of makeup is the equivalent of a man knowing how to tie a tie.  It's a life skill that every woman should learn that will help them in almost all professional settings.  Now I'm not saying all women need to wear tons of makeup all the time.  I'm just saying knowing and understanding the basics and how to pump those "basics" up for a night look are great skills to have and they come in handy in a lot of personal and professional settings.

I'd actually say I get booked most for lessons by women that realize they need to start looking more professional and pulled together for their career and workplace.  Often it's young women just entering the workforce that need to appear mature and polished or even women that are heading back into the workforce after taking some time off for their children.  Whatever the case may be a lot of women are seeing the importance makeup plays in presenting a polished and professional person.

So for anyone looking for a last minute gift idea that is guaranteed to be unique and memorable I'd definitely say a private makeup lesson could be a great idea or suggestion!

Never Stop Learning!

As artists I think it's really important that we constantly learn and improve our skills through testing, workshops, research etc.  All too often we can get busy or complacent and comfortable in our skills and forget that trends, products, styles and skills all evolve and it's important to keep up to date on all the latest advancements and improvements.

No one ever said being a makeup artist was going to be easy or cheap...in fact it's a really expensive career to take up b/c as a working artist you are constantly having to not only replenish your kit and products but also improve your skills and offer new services.

That's why when I found out while I was at IMATS last weekend that Blur Makeup Room was having a tattoo coverage workshop by Thomas E. Surprenant I knew although it maybe wasn't the best time financially to take a workshop (I did after all drop a little over $600 at IMATS eeek!..and I'm getting into my slower period for work EEEKKK!) it was well worth the investment.  And in all honesty that how WE as ARTISTS need to start looking at these things...they are investments into our careers and skills!  Investments that will pay off when we can start offering different services and charging more therefore making more money!

All the time I hear artists whine and complain about not getting ahead and not having money for this or that...guess what - suck it up!  If you want something bad enough and you think it's important enough you'll make that extra money for that workshop or save that extra money for that new product.  I know it hurts a bit b/c it feels like it's a lot of money upfront...and it is but it's so important to keep improving our skills as artists!  I can't stress that enough!  Okay enough of my mini rant ;) let's get to the actual workshop!

So I'll be real.  I took SFX in school but it's never really been my thing as my career focus isn't on movies or film and I'm just not called upon to do much guts and gore lol.  But a tattoo coverage workshop now that's the kind of sfx stuff I can use in my business!  Esp. for commercial or fashion work when you might need to cover up an actor or model's tattoo and it's becoming very popular in bridal too (and it's a great upsell opportunity)!

As someone who has been asked by brides in the past if I do tattoo coverage and I've always shrieked away at the possibility as I've never felt really comfortable in my skills I knew this was definitely an area I could use improvement on and also an area I could immediately see marketing and money making opportunities for my business!

So this week I got to take a very intimate and hands on workshop w/ Thomas E. Surprenant who has to be one of the nicest and down to earth artists around...and so talented!  I mean just look at his resume and body of work and you have to be impressed...hello Emmy winner anyone!  First he showed his tips and techniques for covering tattoos using his very own line of sfx prosthetic paints (available at Blur Makeup Room).  He showed how they can be used both by hand and in the airbrush gun and explained some colour theory and how it applies to the skin and it's colouring.

After watching him work away and cover a VERY large arm tattoo to perfection I got to test out my skills with him there to guide and watch while giving me some hands on tips and tricks.  I'll be honest...I usually SUCK at things when I first attempt them...like worst in the class awful suck so I'm always nervous when pros are watching me but Thom is so friendly and nice that I felt a lot more comfortable and at ease and he's a really great teacher!  I did one wrist tattoo first w/ Thom stepping in to help me every now and again. After that there was time for me to even go after a second wrist tattoo on the other arm and I can definitely say I think I did pretty well if I do say so myself!

There is another Tattoo Coverage Workshop happening at Blur this Sunday Nov 17 from 2-6 and I definitely think it's worth the money!  If you can't make it out this time definitely stay in the loop w/ Blur to find out when they're having Thom back in the future for other workshops!

Pretty good results I'd say!  Forgot to take a before but on the left arm there is a heart tattoo that's been covered...same tattoo as the right arm in the pic....you can see where I could have kept going w/ the coverage up further on the other tattoos on the left arm in the pic.

Thomas even showed us how to do veins on the arm using airbrush for an even more realistic finish...the skin has so many different tones and variations throughout it's important to not make it too perfect looking!  I def. still need to practice on the veins lol!

Prom Time - The Beauty of Youth!

Ahh Prom Season is upon us and I got to meet and work w/ a great young lady today - Alexia and her equally awesome mom Siobhan, who is actually close to my age...I'm not going to lie...it's sort of weird when the mom's of my prom clients are in my age group (well a few yrs older).  I'm use to my brides and I being the same age but mom's it's different...but she's like a really cool, hot, young mom - you know the kind you wanted when YOU were young!  Siobhan and I also have the same b-day which I always think is really neat b/c 1. I never meet anyone w/ my bday 2. I'm into that sort of thing...probably why we hit it off so well!  Can't wait to give her a makeup lesson or do her Hair & Makeup for a special event!

Anyway, back to Alexia.  Gorgeous girl w/ great eyebrows and amazing blonde hair!  Seriously, so long but healthy and curls like a dream and so thick too! She was wearing this really cute spaghetti strapped cherry print mini dress from Dolce & Gabbana (actually her mom's).  It had a retro feel so I wanted to go w/ that for the makeup too so I did a really bright red lip to match the cherries in the dress and a bit of bronze/brown on the eyes w/ some black liner just slightly winged (a full wing liner was just a bit too much for Alexia).  I also really wanted to give her a gorgeous glow on the cheeks and of course I used my favourite Yaby Highlighter for that...seriously it just ALWAYS looks amazing on everyone. 

Like many teenagers, Alexia has a little bit of acne but you'd never know it once you put a bit of foundation and concealer to cover it up.  I actually started w/ the MUFE green primer which helped to minimize any redness on the face.  I used Yaby concealer, Graftobian HD cream foundation and lightly finished it off w/ Yaby Powder Foundation for just a bit of extra coverage.  It's important to remember you don't need to cake on the products to get good coverage.  If you use the right products w/ the right technique a little bit goes a long way!

For the hair I just went through and curled 1 inch sections using my favourite curling iron - my Herstyler 3P wand.  Her hair was very long and very thick but it curled so well.  Some ppl just have hair that curls beautifully and she is one of them...lucky girl!.  Originally, we had talked about putting it up into a messy bun ala Taylor Swift but in the end we just left it down and I pinned it to the side which I think went really well w/ the style of the dress.

I've included a few quick snap shots I took of Alexia before I ran out the door.  Excuse the quality it's not the best but she had tons of ppl taking her picture and I didn't want to wear the girl out before the night even started lol!  Plus I think she was starting to get annoyed w/ everyone taking her picture lol!  The pics really don't do justice to the shine of her hair or the highlight on her cheeks but you get the idea.

Bridal Beauty Dos & Don'ts For Your Wedding Day!

I know there's lots of commotion today w/ the Royal Wedding and lots of blogging about this and that and who wore what and all that but I'm not going to talk about that b/c to be honest I'm probably not going to add anything interesting or revolutionary to what's already been written lol. 

I will say Kate looked gorgeous and her dress w/ sophisticated and elegant just like her.  There's been a lot of talk about the fact that she did her own makeup for her wedding day...which normally I wouldn't suggest (and not just b/c I'm a makeup artist ;) ).  I think your wedding day is stressful enough why worry about your makeup and screwing up your eyeliner or trying to put false lashes on while your hand shakes like a leaf...you wedding day is YOUR one day to be a Princess afterall so why not feel like one and leave it all to a professional.

It should also be noted that Kate had professional makeup lessons before her wedding day (I don't think most brides do this but hey if they want to I DO offer private lessons ;) ).  She did follow one of my cardinal rules for wedding day makeup - Look like your best version of YOURSELF!  She kept her makeup soft and clean and let her natural beauty shine through which is how I personally like to approach wedding makeup in general.

So when I have my Trials w/ my brides after we're done I like to give them some Dos & Don'ts for Pre-Wedding  & Wedding Day Beauty and I thought I'd share some of it w/ you guys here.

DO get your hair trimmed approx. 2 wks before your wedding.  I know lots of brides are trying to grow their hair out but trust me a trim just makes it look healthier when styled and it makes it easier to style on the day of your wedding.  Plus doing it two wks before allows the ends to soften so they don't look so freshly cut on your wedding day.  Also most updos don't actually require for your hair to be SUPER long...in fact after a certain length the hair actually becomes harder to deal w/ or put up b/c there is just so much of it!

DO colour or highlight your approx. 2 wks before your wedding (if you already colour or highlight your hair).  This will allow everything to still look fresh but it won't look like you JUST coloured or highlighted your hair.  Plus if for some reason there is a problem w/ the colour this allows you enough time to fix it.

DON'T do any dramatic hair changes whether it be colour or cut right before your wedding.  1. What if you hate it?!? 2. You don't want everyone to whispering and commenting on the fact that you look like a completely different person.

DO get a facial before your wedding but again DON'T do it right before your wedding in case you have a reaction and break out...again the 2 wk rule works well here.

DO get your eyebrows shaped before your wedding.  A good eyebrow opens up and frames the eye.  But DON'T wait to do it the day of or the day before your wedding in case it causes any redness or irritation. 

DON'T just go to anybody, get a referral just b/c they say they are a professional doesn't mean they are actually good (unfortunately I know this too well from yrs of a "professional" over waxing my brows in highschool...they still don't grow completely in :( )!

DO wear sunblock EVERY DAY (this is no matter what time of year it is ladies not even just before your wedding).  Be esp. careful in the sun leading up to your wedding though b/c tan lines are REALLY hard to cover and no one wants to be burnt or peeling either!

DON'T suddenly decide to take up tanning or visiting tanning beds right before your wedding b/c you want to have some colour even if you do it reg. for some reason right before your wedding will be the ONE time you burn (plus it's just bad for you in general)...DON'T risk the spray tan or self tanners either unless you're well versed in them (no one wants to look like their from Jersey Shore...except maybe the ppl from Jersey Shore ;) )

DON'T try any new and radical face treatments or skin creams right before your wedding.  Who knows what you'll have a reaction to...plus w/ all the stress you're under if you're like me you'll be more prone to breakouts!  That means DON'T even think about Lip Injections or Botox for the First time either!

DO drinks lots of water in the wks leading up to your wedding day.  You should try and do this anyway but esp. before your wedding.  It hydrates your skin and helps flush out toxins from your body...plus no one wants dry, parched skin on their wedding...it might be even worse than oily!

DO hire a Professional Makeup Artist & Hair Stylist.  You want to look and feel your best on your wedding day and a good professional will help you look your best and make your wedding day that much more stressfree.  Plus it allows you to just relax w/ your bridesmaids and have a good time.  As well a good Makeup Artist will be well versed in products that are good for photography as well as in person and will last the ENTIRE day!

DON'T leave booking Makeup & Hair to the last minute.  Many in demand artists book up mths in advance and it would be a shame to not get who you wanted b/c you didn't book ahead of time.

DO have a Makeup & Hair Trial before your wedding.  Again it just makes things that much less stressful on your wedding day when you've already worked out w/ the artist(s) exactly what you want.  Also you want to make sure you get along w/ your artist(s) they are going to be w/ you the entire morning before your wedding you don't want to hire someone that really annoys you or just doesn't vibe w/ your personality.

DO your research when hiring a Makeup Artist & Hair Stylist.  DON'T be afraid to do more than one trial w/ more than one artist if you want (and you can afford it).  Yes, I'm confident enough in my skills that I don't mind if a person has trials w/ other artists...hey sometimes they may even like another artist's style better, I don't take it personally I know I'll get booked up that day either way ;)

DON'T be afraid to speak up!  If you don't like something or want something changed w/ your Makeup or Hair say it...a good artist will NOT be offended and they WANT your feedback.  If they do get offended you probably don't want to book them anyway.  I mean in the end it's all about YOU feeling comfortable and beautiful on YOUR wedding day.

DO send your Makeup Artist/Hair Stylist pictures before the trial or take them w/ you to the trial.  I personally LOVE to see pictures and inspiration before I meet the bride b/c everyone has a different interpretation of something - what's dramatic to me might be natural to another person therefore pictures ALWAYS help clarify things.

DON'T make yourself unrecognizable on your wedding day by wearing too much makeup or a style that's totally not you.  I always say that you should look like the BEST version of YOURSELF on your wedding day!  The last thing you want ppl to say is "Oh my God I barely recognize you!".  This is why it's important to be clear w/ your artist about how you want to look on your wedding day.  I always ask my brides how much makeup they normally wear or if they tend to wear a lot of eyeliner, lipstick etc.  If a bride normally wears a lot of black eyeliner I'm probably going to use black eyeliner even if I wouldn't normally just b/c she's going to feel more comfortable that way or if she NEVER wears makeup but wants a smokey eye I'm probably going to do a subdued smokey eye b/c anything more is probably going to overwhelm her.  A lot of brides think they want a makeup look that is more dramatic then they actually do I find.

DO wear some makeup on your wedding day...even if you normally don't.  Also DO strongly suggest this to your bridesmaids and mother as well.  If someone NEVER wears makeup it's even more of a reason to hire a professional b/c they really won't know how to do it on themselves and make it look good or if they don't wear any makeup they will stand out in the pictures in a BAD way b/c they will just look so washed out or underdone next to everyone else.  A GOOD artist will understand and know how to do a makeup look that is soft and natural and won't feel overly heavy on an unwilling particpant.  In fact a large majority of my Bridal Clientele often hire me b/c they say the Brides on my website look so Natural and NOT overdone!

DO keep some lipstick/gloss and powder on hand for touch ups throughout the day.  No one wants a shiny nose or forehead in their pics.  As well always good to  have a couple of extra bobby pins if your hair is pinned up too!  Personally, I give a complete touch up kit to my brides but every artist is different.

DO try and get a good night's sleep before your wedding!  I know it's hard b/c of the excitment and nerves but the last thing you want is to look tired and puffy on your wedding day.  To go along w/ this DON'T drink too much the night before your wedding...no one wants to risk a hang over...that NEVER looks good!

DO try and relax on your wedding day...it's your one day to feel special and it will be over before you know it.  Things are bound to go wrong on the day but try not to stress too much b/c you're marrying the person that you Love and that's what matters.  Plus frown lines NEVER look good in pictures ;)

The Power of Red

So Fall is officially here which means I can start pulling out one of my fav. makeup trends - "The Red Lip".  Although, I hate to call it a "trend" b/c IMO a great red lip never goes out of style and always has it's place in Fashion.  It is the easiest and quickest way to bring your look from casual to glam in less then 30 seconds.  Everyone is always about the smokey eyes when they want to look done up but I really believe we have to give more credit to the Red Lip! 

With the popularity of shows like Mad Men on the rise I find a strong lip for Fall is even more popular.  I mean lipstick was an essential part of a woman's wardrobe back then and a well done lip can be a great accessory to any look! 

Nowadays, we don't put as much effort into getting ready like back then and I think that's often why lipstick is pushed aside for it's lighter, less formal counterpart lipgloss.  We often tend to look at lipstick...esp. Red Lipstick as a very formal thing that can only be worn out at night or on special occassions but I don't think that's true at all!  I frequently rock the Red Lip during the day and yes I do get a few glances...I think they are good glances ;).  But that's what it's all about.  You have to have confidence to wear a Red Lip b/c it does call attention to you but what's wrong w/ a little attention every now and then. 

One of the biggest things I hear all the time is women saying I want to find the perfect red or oh yeah it looks great on you but I CAN'T wear it!  I'm hear to say YES, you can WEAR red!  You just have to find the right red!  And in truth you just have to get use to yourself in it.  When I first started wearing Red I'm not going to lie I felt really self-conscious and uncomfortable like ppl were staring at me but now I feel empowered and in control...amazing what a little lipstick can do ;)

Yes a Red Lip is a little more high maintenance then say your usual gloss but that's not always a bad thing...on a positive note I eat and drink less b/c I don't want to mess up my lipstick lol!  Although, a great tip is to drink from a straw...I drink everything from a straw and it removes a lot less lipstick then drinking straight from a glass or gently lick  your lips before you take a sip from a glass it will help stop the transfer of
lipstick to the glass.

When rocking a Red Lip one of the most important things is to have CLEAN and EVEN lines!  You can use lipliner to help w/ this but another great tip I find is to define your lines and boundaries w/ a bit of concealer.  I use a square tip brush and take a bit of concealer and just mark my edges around my mouth a bit and blend...this cleans up any red that might bleed outwards and it allows you to achieve really sharp edges which I'm super anal about on set for shoots!  Another important thing to remember...always exfoliate your lips if they are dry and flakey before wearing Red Lipstick...dry, chapped, flakey lips NEVER look good esp. NOT w/ Red Matte Lips!  Plus this is a big prob for a lot of ppl in the Winter so something to watch out for...always moisturize you lips!

Here's some pics of me using the concealer technique.  Sorry I'm no model and the lighting wasn't great in my bathroom lol!  I also should have powdered a bit more before I started to remove the shine...but whatever lol!

Also you want to be very careful to not walk around w/ Red Lipstick on your teeth...which I unfortunately have done before :(  An easy trick to solve this is to put you finger in your mouth and pull it out.  It will remove access lipstick from your lips.

So I also took a bunch of pictures of myself w/ a variety of Red Lipsticks...some flattering and some not so much lol!  I also took a picture of myself w/ no lipstick and one w/ a nude lipstick and gloss combo...another popular look in my repetoire.  I did this so that you can see the difference just a touch of colour and lipstick can bring to the face and how it changes everything about how I look.  There is nothing different about my makeup in any of the looks other then the lipstick.  Even if you look at the pics above you can see my foundation is pretty natural, just some mascara, touch of cream blush and my brows filled in (this is a necessity).  In fact I don't even really wear eyeliner anymore during the day and yet when I wear Red Lipstick everyone thinks I'm "done up"...no eyeliner or eyeshadow and I still look polished and fancy...wow that's impressive to me!

There are a million other shades of Red out there but that gives you an idea about how different Reds can look from person to person.  So experiment and find the Right Red for YOU!  It's only lipstick afterall...if you don't like it rub it off and start again!

Girls Just Want To Have Fun!

So yesterday was a busy day for me.  Wedding in the morning, bachelorette party at night!  I had so much fun at the bachelorette party.  What a great group of girls!  I even stayed longer then planned b/c they were so much fun and sweet...plus as we found out in my other post I obviously have no life of my own I spend Fri. nights cleaning makeup brushes lol!

So yeah I arrived at the Bachelorette party around 5:45 and not all the guests were there yet so the girls offered me a cocktail.  Always a great way to start off a gig lol.  I wish all jobs started w/ cocktails!  They had arranged to have an on-site bartender there to make drinks throughout the party and also to teach the girls some tricks and history of different cocktails and drinks...it was very entertaining. 

Basically, my game plan was to do a demo/makeup lesson for the party guests using the bride-to-be as my demo model...therefore she get's her makeup done and everyone gets to learn some new tips and tricks.  First I did a day look and then we all took a break, ate some food, had a drink (not me I only had the one don't worry) and then I moved on to the second part of my demo...taking that day look and switching it to night.  During the demo the girls got to ask me any questions they had about products and techniques.

Lindsay, the bride looked great after and totally glam and ready to go out to the bar later that night.  After the demo one of the girls asked me if I could teach her about doing a smokey on her...she was Asian and I've had a lot of Asians in the past ask me about smokey eyes so I was more then  happy to show her...even though this wasn't part of the original plan ;) .  She looked great after and I even did a little contouring and lip gloss too.  Of course a couple of others then wanted to get their makeup done...how was I going to say no the girls were all so nice and I didn't have any plans on Saturday night so why not.
