Yep, People Really Do Still Get Married In The Winter!

As I've mentioned before the longer I'm in the Makeup & Hair Bridal business the more I realize there really isn't a "wedding season" anymore.  Yes, it does slow down but even from Jan-Mar I've been steadily booking and working on 2-3 weddings a mth...not bad esp. compared to last year when I didn't start doing ANY weddings until April!

Back in Jan. I actually had a day where I had TWO weddings back to back!  The first wedding was a perfect example of the type of client I frequently seem to attract and love working with!  Anyone who has been keeping up on my bridal business knows I tend to do a lot of "alternative" or "vintage" style weddings and my brides are often not that "fussy".  They tend to be more laid back and casual and don't want anything too dramatic or overdone which I totally love b/c it tends to be my wedding style as well...or at least what I'm getting known for.

Sarah (the bride) was actually a referral from a girl I went to uni w/ Melissa which is totally cool.  I have Melissa on my Facebook and it's always nice when someone that you know refers someone to you b/c they've seen your work and think you're worth referring.

As I mentioned before Sarah was very laid back, casual and not your "typical" bride...well maybe MY typical bride lol...but I'm just lucky I suppose ;)  She wanted a bit of a vintage feel as she didn't have a typical white wedding dress but this gorgeous blue 50's vibe dress...so vibrant and pretty!  She also had an amazing fascinator and shoes!  She wanted her makeup to be fairly clean w/ a slight winged liner and she wanted her hair to be clean and classic w/ a bit of a finger wave in the front and a small bun in the back.

I really have to give a big thanks to Ashley Readings who helped me out on the wedding and to Patti Miller for taking such amazing photos that day!  Here's a couple Patti shared w/ me!

Sarah's MOH...she had the most gorgeous naturally curly hair so of course I was going to work w/ that!  It would be a crime to not leave curls that naturally beautiful IMO!

10 Ways To Store and Organize Makeup

I was contacted on Monday to help contribute to a little article in the Huffington Post.  They were doing a special series dedicated to Spring Cleaning (it is that time of year after all) and wanted to get my Top 10 Tips for How to Store & Organize Makeup.  Kind of a neat thing b/c writing for magazines or other web publications really is something I would like to expand more into in the future anyway.

If you're curious you can check out the story here!

Btw if any other magazines or web publications are looking for guest or column writers I'm totally open to it...contact me!

Art Direction

Here's my latest editorial for Lilogi for their Avant Garde Week that just wrapped up on Fri.  Interesting theme and definitely worth checking out on the site if you haven't already...some very cool clothes and concepts displayed last week.

My concept for the shoot was sort of a Marie Antoinette/Tim Burton mix.  We agreed to do a sort of white face but I also really wanted to do a big bouffant hairstyle that also involved my mini crimper to give it texture and make it a little more interesting.  We didn't want anything on the hair to be too perfect so I made sure to careful pull pieces out from the bouffant.

Here's a couple of Behind the Scenes pics too...I haven't included any of those in awhile ;)

No Man's Land

So here is my latest Fashion Editorial that has been featured on the homepage of Lilogi all week for their Concrete Jungle theme!  How amazing is the location!!!!  I'm not going to tell you too much about it b/c it's a secret but I will say it was an abandoned greenhouse outside the city and we did have to do a little trespassing to get to the location but there is no denying that it was well worth it!

My Makeup and Hair inspiration for this shoot was sort of a Raw, Animalistic, Tribal Meets High Fashion sort of vibe.  I wanted the Makeup to look a bit messy, raw and undone but still strong and powerful that's why I went for a messy black smokey eye that I actually mostly applied using my fingers and a really bronzed skin and cheek look.  We mixed the lips up between nude and a deep wine.

For the Hair I did an almost sort of dread/matted look and I'm not going to lie I felt sorry for Michel (the model) b/c I can't imagine it was easy to get out of her hair :(  The things we do for fashion...although I do keep doing mean things to the model's hair (dreads, afros...wait for next wk on Lilogi...it's big too ;) ).  For the second hair look I stayed right on trend and did a really messy top bun which I thought looked great w/ the deep lip as it really allowed the face and lips to be the main focus!

Alex outdid herself when it came to accessories on this one!  Seriously, pay close attention to some of the rings and necklaces in this shoot - they are crazy!  Can't believe how well this whole shoot came together...really was surreal looking in the location.  Sometimes you just catch yourself and think...is this really my job lol!?!

LUXE.LA.SHE - Eyelash Extensions

A couple of weeks ago I had a private appt. w/ a new client - Georgia.  I was doing her Makeup & Hair for a Baptism where she was standing up as the Godmother.  Right away I noticed she had the most amazing long lashes and after a few mins of talking I found out she's an eyelash extension specialist and she's just opened up a new shop down on Queen W. right near Much Music!

I think eyelash extensions are awesome esp. if you have puny lashes to start w/ or you want to look fresh, awake and even a bit glamorous all the time but don't want to mess w/ mascara clumping or flaking or the hassle of trying to put false lashes on yourself.  Also great if you're going on vacation somewhere warm where you'll be on the beach all the time and great for your wedding day too!

It's also important to when getting eyelash extensions that you get them from a reputable and trained specialist...I mean this is your eyes we're talking about here...I don't know about you but I don't want to take any chances!

So anyway, Georgia does some great work...you can see some of her Before & After Photos here.  She really takes her time w/ each application and never tries to rush the process just so that she can get more clients in the day.  To me this is important.  I mean if I'm going to spend money on something I want it to be professional and high quality.

So if you're looking for eyelash extensions in the Toronto area I suggest checking out Georgia at LUXE.LA.SHE Lash Boutique!
